GREEN ROOFS AND LIVING WALLS DESIGN, PLANNING,
AND CONSTRUCTION
Mondays, 6:30 – 7:45 p.m.
3 units. $350 credit; $250 noncredit.
Class starts Monday, September 12, 2011.
Instructor: Paul Kephart, one of the world’s leading experts on green roofs, and creator of the roof for the new San Francisco Academy of Sciences building.
Co-instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect, Director, SFIA, and author/editor of The
Ecological Design Handbook.
This course provides comprehensive instruction on the latest advances and techniques in one of the greatest sources of green building environmental enhancement — green roof design and vegetated walls.
Multiple case-study presentations will show the making of real projects, large and small. We’ll demonstrate the steps of design and construction, incorporating the botanical, mechanical, structural, and construction details that comprise green roof technology. This class is suited for newcomers and as follow-through for students who attended the Spring 2011 Semester, E-75 Green Roofs class.
More about the instructor: Paul Kephart is one of our country’s foremost ecological authorities on green roofs, living walls, and watershed management systems. A trained biologist, Paul has a profound understanding of natural processes and sustainability, and how they impact our developed landscapes. He uses art, ecology and science to reclaim our natural resources.
Uniquely committed to restoring biodiversity in our cities and suburbs, Paul has more than twenty years of comprehensive consulting experience in land use planning and resource management. He has also established himself as the leading ecologist and technical design consultant in the fields of living architecture/vegetative structures and sustainable landscapes. See the work of Paul Kephart at www.ranacreek.org.

HOW TO DESIGN THE TOTALLY GREEN BUILDING
Mondays, 8:00 – 9:15 p.m.
3 units. $350 credit; $250 noncredit.
Class starts Monday, September 12, 2011.
Instructor: Fred Stitt, Architect, Director, SFIA.
Learn the step-by-step process and creative thought methods required to design an autonomous building made of the earth it stands on, using recycled goods and natural materials — a building that generates more energy than it uses, powers the occupants’ vehicles, absorbs pollutants and greenhouse gasses, provides natural habitat, harvests rain and greywater, processes its own sewage and waste, grows food, and enhances the lives and health of its occupants. Students have the choice of designing any building type they wish, but will be encouraged to design their own future home.
More about the instructor: Fred Stitt is an advocate of building designs that incorporate ALL possible environmental enhancements and the economies of green buildings. He is currently finishing a book on Frank Lloyd Wright’s methodologies, titled Frank Lloyd Wright Green. He is also preparing a new book, EcoWave, that will present many great but still little-known advances in green building technology.

PASSIVE HOUSE AND ENERGY MODELING:
THE FOUNDATION OF HIGH-PERFORMANCE BUILDINGS
Tuesdays, 6:30 – 7:45 p.m.
3 units. $350 credit; $250 noncredit.
Class starts Tuesday, September 13, 2011.
Instructor: Katy Hollbacher, P.E., Principal and founder of Beyond Efficiency; licensed Civil Engineer, Certified Passive House Consultant, LEED Homes Rater, and Certified GreenPoint Rater.
Most energy savings are the result of sustainable design, not special equipment. This class demonstrates the underlying science and calculations of heat transfer and solar gain. For architects, engineers, and green building consultants who want to learn about the Passive House and how to leverage the use of this rigorous building energy standard in your projects. The main objective of this course: to understand the underlying science and calculations for heat transfer and solar gain, and how they inform building energy modeling tools. The Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) modeling tool, available for $225 from passivehouse.us, is encouraged but not required (class exercises and homework will not require it).
Class topics, week by week:
1. Passive House intro: What makes a Passive House; what you need to know and expect if you embark on a Passive House project.
2. Energy balance: heat losses – heat gains = heat demand; building orientation & building shape; heat transfer mechanisms and how they apply to buildings.
3. Windows: key terminology; U.S. window specifications; U-values; window weak points (not the glass!) and how to mitigate them.
4. Building assemblies: insulation, thermal bridging, and constructability.
5. Thermal mass: When does thermal mass matter? Getting over myths and making sense of a complicated topic.
6. Modeling strategies: how to approach energy modeling in a strategic way, to minimize effort and mistakes.
More about the instructor: Katy Hollbacher holds a Master of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering from the University of Michigan. She also holds California’s Title 24 consultant credentials as a Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) and Certified Energy Plans Examiner (CEPE). Katy combines fourteen years of practical experience with her in-depth knowledge of technical practices. She leads Beyond Efficiency in helping professionals integrate technical expertise, analytical tools, and common-sense best practices into their multifamily and mixed-use projects. She spent the preceding five years managing Build It Green’s suite of technical information programs, including the “Ask an Expert” green building hotline and Berkeley’s Best Builders program.

GREEN PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Tuesdays, 8:00 – 9:15 p.m.
3 units. $350 credit; $250 noncredit.
Class starts Tuesday, September 13, 2011.
Instructor: Dave Deppen, Architect.
Dave Deppen has had extensive experience working with real-world green building projects. The skillful management of a project is crucial to the accomplishment of green objectives. This class will emphasize powerful (and little-known) techniques of project management, as well as specific approaches to help achieve positive environmental results.
Students will review many examples from real projects. The core discipline will be architecture, but the class is for both students and beginners in project management, as well as for all design professions, including engineering and design consulting.
Topics include :
* Often-missed essentials for starting your project
* How to guide programming and project priorities
* Quality assurance time savers
* The key to cost control on green projects
* Behind the scenes at certifying systems
* Best ways to benefit the construction process
* Team dynamics
* and more. . . .
WEDNESDAYS

FREEHAND DRAWING
Wednesdays, 6:30 – 7:45 p.m.
3 units. $350 credit; $250 noncredit.
Class starts Wednesday, September 14, 2011.
Instructor: Penny Burbank, Artist, Graphic Design and Communications Consultant.
Anyone can learn to draw, and draw well — but there are tricks to it, and they’re best learned in a supportive environment. This class follows the groundbreaking techniques of Betty Edwards and her books, The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook.
You won’t find a more effective guide to get you through the inhibitions most people have about their drawing skills and allow you to start reaching a professional level of nature drawing and architectural sketching.

BAMBOO: AN IN-DEPTH, HANDS-ON INTRODUCTION
Wednesdays, 8:00 – 9:30 p.m.
3 units. $350 credit; $250 noncredit.
Class starts Wednesday, September 14, 2011.
Instructor: Darrel DeBoer, Architect, and bamboo design and construction consultant; coauthor of the book, Bamboo Building and Culture and author of Bamboo Building Essentials.
Bamboo can grow as fast as four feet in a day, yet mature poles are equal in strength to steel. It is a renewable resource that can bioremediate air and soil, treat wastewater, provide a reliable food source, and have potential as a local building material almost anywhere in the world. Recent innovations in joinery and treatment have changed our perspective on bamboo. Now it’s only a matter of learning how to use it properly.
Class objectives: Learn how bamboo is different from wood, and apply this knowledge to the design of bamboo structures. Students will analyze and investigate how bamboo can be used in today’s building industry. Half the time will be spent viewing extensive slide shows and discussing the eleven principles in Darrel’s book, Bamboo Building Essentials. The other half will be spent sketching and building models.
