Courses at SFIA present the overall context of architecture and the evolution of consciousness – the history of humankind’s philosophies, social systems, technology, crafts, music and other high arts. Great architecture is presented from the inside out, starting with the methods by which they were designed, their construction methods, and their highest function, as inspiration.
Students in many schools lament the fact that they are graded mainly on how well they mimic current architectural fashion or accept instructors’ design tastes. The result is that many students learn how to imitate others’ work, sometimes in clever ways, but never experience real creativity. Negative criticism and arbitrary judgments of student work are proven inhibitors to learning and are not offered at SFIA.
