Claire Kellerman of KLARITY EcoArts Workshops; Founder & Director, Maui Permaculture Network; apprenticed with Nader Khalili of The California Institute of Earth Arts & Architecture (CalEarth) since 1993; and a certified Permaculture Designer through The Permaculture Institute of Northern California. Claire has traveled extensively as a writer/photographer, teaching, and learning to bring Permaculture Design mainstream.
Topics include:
• Introduction to Permaculture Design, a slide show of world- wide applications, including living systems of bioremediation, composting toilets, living machines, alternative construction methods, intentional communities, global eco-community network, regenerative design in businesses and eco-education.
• Permaculture Principles and Ethics. Circle discussion, visualizing, and supportive actions outlined.

This design studio explores a wide range of Native American building traditions, principles of sustainable design, and the creative design process.
Topics include:
• Principles of organic architectural planning.
• Design for site and climate: Native American construction methods.
• Systematic analysis systems for controlled passive solar design.
• Native astronomical alignment and solar path analysis.
• Solar orientation and dynamic design for the seasons’ climate conditions, day and night.
• Alternative construction materials such as Rastra.
• Developing a “green” plumbing plan.
• Berkeley City Center proposal, Ohlone Indian Center Eco Resort in Guatemala, based on Mayan designs.
Also includes insights on the nuts-and-bolts practical issues of running a green-oriented architecture practice in the Bay Area.

• How to fully understand and “feel” solar orientation.
• Learning from the history of the land.
• Understanding land as a living organism.
• Raising your capacity for observation and conscious awareness.
• Methods of Native American trackers.
• How to interview and learn from those who know your building site best.
• Finding and using little-known, invaluable sources of site information.
